If I buy the ethernet locked version, will there be a problem a year or two from now when I buy a new workstation? What's the procedure for updating?

When you buy an Ether license you can elect to receive 6 monthly temp licenses for the first year. These let you switch PCs, for no charge, up to 2 times in that first year.
To extend that "switchability" beyond the first year, you'll need to sign up for extended support, which will also give you access to updates and the online resources. The fee for that extended support will be around $100 per year.
If you can afford the extra $100 now, a dongle is the better option. You get a permanent license, and can move the dongle between desktops and laptops, switching whenever you want.
